Chapter 23

Heavy, rolling clouds held back the daylight. Rain seemed imminent. Getting to the safe house was their only hope for refuge -- from rain and capture. They ran across the street, and immediately disappeared into the shadows. If he had stopped and looked back, Grant would've seen Gorelov rushing from inside Lubyanka, trying to see the direction he and Doherty had gone.

"Are you okay?" Grant asked, whispering.

"I'm . . . okay."

Doherty was already breathing heavy. Grant hoped that his strength would hold out long enough, at least until they reached the safe house.

They were finally at the end of the alley. "Wait up," Grant said, keeping them within the shadows. He leaned his head around the corner, seeing lights in shops and offices starting to come on. Traffic was increasing. He turned to Doherty and quickly unlocked the cuffs. "Here, put this on," Grant said, removing his jacket, figuring the black prison pants Doherty was wearing would be less conspicuous if he wore the leather jacket. Doherty gladly accepted it.

Grant immediately slipped out of the shoulder holster, putting the Makarov in his pants pocket, the magazines in the jacket pocket. He rolled up the holster tightly, then jammed it into the other jacket pocket, not worrying about the bulge.

He laid a hand on Doherty's shoulder. "You're doing fine. We should be at our destination in about ten minutes. Let's go."

Grant kept them away from heavily traveled streets, then finally saw the red M for the metro. He directed Doherty to walk ahead of him. "I'll tell you which way to go." Keeping his hand in his gun pocket, Grant occasionally glanced over his shoulder, attempting to cover both their sixes.

The glaring lights around the Kremlin showed in the distance. He directed Doherty to go left, keeping them as far from the Kremlin and Red Square as possible. Cafes and a small grocery store had opened. He had to chance it. He found a secure place for Doherty to wait, then he left to buy a few groceries. Both of them needed sustenance.

They finally reached Neglinnaya Ulitsa. The area quickly went from busy streets to dirty, dark alleys. Unlike the way he usually got to this point during night hours, and even though it wasn't bright daylight, staying out of sight would prove to be more of a challenge. They'd have to weave their way in and out of side alleys, hang close to buildings, and hope no one was watching them. No one.

"I'll take the lead now, just stay close. We're almost there. Promise."

Doherty didn't ask where he was being taken. He was just grateful to be out of hell, even if he was still in Russia.
